Description

The masking tape I recommend for successful fuse bead designs. Stickier than regular masking tape, it holds every bead firmly when you flip your work: your best friend for avoiding ironing mishaps.

Shop's top pick: this is the tape I recommend first, and the one recommended by Artkal, the fuse bead manufacturer.

Why use this masking tape?

  • Extra-strong adhesive: it sticks better than ordinary tape. Beads stay put when you flip or move your design, even on large projects. No more beads rolling under the table.
  • More even fusing: you lift off the pegboard and iron the peg side first. Beads melt evenly, with no gaps or shifts where pegboards meet.
  • Boards and ironing paper stay fixed: a few strips are enough to lock joined pegboards together or hold your ironing paper in place.
  • Clean removal: made of crepe paper, it peels off without pulling beads out or leaving marks.

How to use: the tape method

  1. Place your beads on the pegboard following your pattern.
  2. Cover the whole surface with strips of tape, overlapping them by about 5 mm. Press firmly so every bead sticks.
  3. Trim the tape to about 1 cm around the design.
  4. Lay a rigid piece of cardboard on top, flip everything over and gently lift off the pegboard: the beads stay stuck to the tape.
  5. Cover with ironing paper and iron on medium heat, one area at a time, in small circles. Let it cool flat under a heavy book.
  6. Flip the design, slowly peel off the tape, then iron the second side.

FAQ

How is it different from the 50 m roll?
This tape sticks more firmly: it's the one I recommend for large designs and for avoiding mishaps. The 50 mm x 50 m roll is cheaper per meter and works well for simple designs or for holding pegboards together.

Do I need tape for a small design?
No. For a design that fits on a single pegboard, ironing paper is enough. Tape becomes useful as soon as you join several pegboards or the design is hard to flip.

How many projects does one roll cover?
20 m of tape covers about 0.8 m² including overlap, roughly the equivalent of forty 52 x 52 pegboards.

What are fuse beads?

Small 2.6mm beads that you place one by one on a pegboard, following a pattern. A few seconds with an iron is enough to fuse them into one solid piece.

At 2.6mm, they offer far more detail than the big beads of childhood: ideal for faces, gradients and small jewelry. The gesture is slow, repetitive and soothing.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Your questions, our answers

What are fuse beads and how do they work?

Fuse beads are small plastic tubes that you arrange on a pegboard, following a pattern. You heat them with an iron through baking paper: the edges melt and fuse together, and once it has cooled you have a solid piece, flat or 3D.

What is the difference between mini beads (2.6mm) and standard beads (5mm)?

Beads mainly come in 2.6mm (mini) and 5mm (standard). 5mm is big, easy and fast, perfect for large pieces. 2.6mm offers much more detail, ideal for faces, gradients and jewelry. For the same design, 2.6mm gives a finer result but takes more time.

Which fuse bead brand should you choose?

Most major brands work in the same way; the difference lies in melting temperature and origin. Some melt hotter, others lower and faster. More important than the brand: choose real, high-quality fuse beads.

Should you buy a complete set or single-color refills?

Large mixed tubs are inexpensive, but sorting takes a lot of time and common colors run out quickly. It is better to buy refills color by color according to your project needs, with extra black and white.

How many beads and colors do you need to start?

Start with a basic palette, often around 48 colors, which is enough for most beginner patterns. Then add colors one by one according to your designs, with 1,000 to 2,000-bead refills and extra black and white.

Are fuse beads from different brands compatible with each other?

It is generally not recommended. Mixing them is technically possible, but keep a few points in mind, in order of importance: Color differences matter most: even under the same color name, shades vary from one brand to another, and the difference shows within a single piece. Different melting points: each brand melts at a different temperature, so when ironing the beads do not fuse at the same moment, which gives an uneven result. Slight size differences: in practice, for the same size, diameter differences between brands are minimal and rarely a problem; watch instead for small variations from one batch to another, even within the same brand. Tip: for the most reliable color and ironing, stick to one brand and one batch within a single piece.

I have never tried fuse beads. Is it beginner-friendly?

Yes, absolutely. Fuse beads are one of the easiest crafts to start: you follow a pattern color by color, with no drawing skills needed. Start with a simple design and you will get a clean, satisfying result from your first project.
